FIRST, which means “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology,” is a non-profit organization for high school students. The intent of FIRST is “to create a world where science and technology are celebrated… where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes…” -Dean Kamen (Founder of FIRST).
As FIRST’s website describes it, FIRST Robotics Competition is:
“The varsity Sport for the Mind, FRC combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of 25 students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team ‘brand,’ hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It’s as close to ‘real-world engineering’ as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team.”
In addition to inspiring students to pursue careers in science and technology, promote Science, Engineering, Technology and Math (STEM) programs, FIRST continues to work with national universities to provide millions of dollars in scholarships each year for students who are involved in the FIRST Robotics Competition. More information about FIRST and their programs can be found at the FIRST website.
